Inside Johnny Depp’s Private Island

In 2004, Johnny Depp, then aged 41, purchased an island in the Bahamas for $3.6 million ($4.7 million in 2015 dollars).

Depp, who has had a career spanning over 30 years has starred in many films, including the Pirates of the Caribbean series as a swashbuckling pirate, Edward Scissorhands, and the 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland, has a current net worth in excess of $400 million, so the purchase only comprises about 1% of his total net worth. Depp was inspired to purchase the island after his role as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean caused him to fall in love with the relaxed lifestyle of a Bahamas paradise—and he’s not the only one! He joins an illustrious club of
to have splurged on their own private island, including Beyonce Knowles & Jay Z, Nicolas Cage, David Copperfield, Edward de Bono, and Eddie Murphy, among others. The island itself has six beaches and includes a palm tree–lined lagoon and several self-sufficient solar-powered houses. In 2009, Depp spoke to Vanity Fair about the purchase and what it means to him: 'I don’t think I’d ever seen any place so pure and beautiful … You can feel your pulse rate drop about 20 beats. It’s instant freedom.'
